About - The Gay Magazine
by DJ Jimmy Newsum

Club music fans rejoice.  The RCA Music Group is the first major label to release its classic dance mixes to the mass-market consumer. With its rich history in dance music, the label is presenting out of print and never-before-released mixes of the greatest dance tracks of all time by the biggest names in music: Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keyes… Also 70’s classics like Vickie Sue Robinson’s “Turn the Beat Around”, and 80’s gems from Evelyn Champagne King, Taylor Dayne and The Eurythmics. Many of the remixes are by gay DJ faves like Peter Rauhoffer, Junior Vasquez, and local cutey Joe Bermudez. This is what club music fans have been begging for. And just like the wait, these beats are ovah! Go to www.dancevault.com for more details.

July 21, 2006 - Edge New York
Taylor Dayne is just one of many artists whose classic dance hits are showcased in the Dance Music Vault. Spearheaded by RCA Music Group’s Hosh Gureli, this important project was launched a few months ago in an ambitious effort to digitize both new and classic dance recordings that might otherwise be relegated to vinyl obscurity. Teaming up with iTunes (for the broadest possible reach), Gureli has found the perfect outlet for his pet project, and he’s hoping its success thus far will convince other labels to get in on the act. Hundreds of songs, including such standards as Robert Owens’ "I’ll Be Your Friend," Alison Limerick’s "Where Love Lives" and "Native New Yorker" by Odyssey, are already uploaded to the site with new bundles being added every month.

Featured remixes by other artists include Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Deborah Cox, Heather Headly, Exposé, Pointer Sisters and Lisa Stansfield. Check out www.dancevault.com or iTunes Music Store to start (legally) downloading now. Some of the pricing may seem a bit high at first glance, but those items are probably bundles containing several remixes of the same song. Individual tracks are quite affordable, often at just $0.99 a pop.

June 8, 2006 - Chicago Free Press
By Gregg Shapiro

Hosh Gureli is a proud man. You can hear it in his voice when he talks about his pet project, the RCA Dance Vault, which launched in March and followed up with a second installment in May. The project makes long out-of-print disco classics and rare remixes accessible to iTunes users who are hungry for dance beats.
Gureli is the openly gay vice president of A&R at the RCA Music Group. He took time out of his busy schedule to give CFP the scoop.
Gregg Shapiro: Do you remember the first song you ever danced to in a gay bar?
Hosh Gureli: No, because I started DJing at both straight and gay clubs. I can tell you my most memorable record, dancing in a club, that had an impact on me: Bonnie Pointer's "Heaven Must of Sent You."
GS: Oh, yeah! With the chimes and everything!
HG: There was also that Suzi Lane record. That was another one. GS: How much influence did being in Boston (at Emerson College), a city renowned for its fertile music scene, have on your musical taste?
HG: At Emerson there was WERS, which was a 100,000-watt (college) radio station on which I was fortunate enough to get a show that I called "Boston Master Mix." It was the first mix show in Boston, (and it) had an unbelievable impact on a lot of people without me even knowing it.
GS: Would you say that doing radio had more of an influence on you than the presence of other musicians?
  HG: Absolutely!
GS: How did the RCA Dance Vault on iTunes evolve?
HG: This was an idea I thought up about a year ago. É I was looking on iTunes for "Native New Yorker" (by Odyssey). It's a classic song, and I wanted to see what was up there and what wasn't. "Native New Yorker" wasn't there. Then I started looking for our other dance artists and remixes and (they weren't there either). But I know we're converting everything we have, because the music industry is moving towards a digital platform to survive.
The president of the RCA Music Group, Charles Goldstuck, recognized that I was into the whole digital aspectÉand put me on the digital strategy team. I proposedÉthat we create the RCA Dance Vault. I had to scramble to find the masters. (They were) on pneumatic tapes to half-inch tapes to DATs-to you name it. (I even went to) friends who might have had a master CD or, in some rare cases, (I took) it right off the vinyl, as I did with Icicle Works.
  GS: That's incredible.
HG: You would be surprised. Sometimes if you get a clean piece of vinyl, it will sound better than the digital (version) because of the warmth. The Icicle Works actually sold very well during the first month (on iTunes), and I was very pleased about that.
The first month, because of the Winter Music Conference, iTunes finally gave us the green light. It was a hurry-up-and-go situation, but it was not easy to do. (We had to) clear all the cuts for digital use. When these artists' contracts were signed 30 or so years ago, there was nothing about digital rights-whether it be mobile, download, ringtones or any of that. The contracts had to be rewritten, and in some cases the third-party licenses had expired.
GS: What do you hope to achieve with this?
HG: I think of this as the first step in reinvigorating dance music. (It's) not looked at, especially by major labels, as a profitable source of income. It is looked at as a marketing tool, whether to get the gay community or the underground, hip community to say, "Wow! That's a really cool mix of this artist, I'm going to check them out." I want to take it beyond that to say that you can actually pay for the mixes that you've done, and then some, because there is a fan base out there that loves it. They just don't know where to get it.
GS: In addition to remixes by Heather Headley and Kelly Clarkson, who are some of the contemporary artists you are excited about having available on the RCA Dance Vault?
HG: I'm looking very forward to the new Christina Aguilera record. That's going to be hot and we're going to have some blazing mixes on that. She's coming with fire. And there will be a new Kelly Clarkson record by Christmas.

Dance, Dance, Dance

Review by Duave Wells, 365Gay.com

Dance music fans have a new reason to cheer thanks to the recent launch of the new RCA Dance Music Vault on iTunes.

For the first time, many of those elusive DJ mixes and out-of-print classics that dance fanatics have lusted after for a lifetime are finally available on iTunes in what can only be described as a groundbreaking move by the always cutting edge RCA Music Group.

"It’s a very good day today!" Said RCA Music Group Vice President of A&R Hosh Gureli speaking from his office in New York last week on the day the iTunes catalog went online. "It’s like a mental day for the dance world I think…and also for the gay community as well."

And truth be told Gureli is not even exaggerating. Not only can you now download previously unreleased mixes of contemporary hits like Kelly Clarkson’s "Because of You" and Heather Headley’s "In My Mind", you can also download classic alternative 80’s tracks like Icicle Works’

"Whisper To A Scream" and legendary 70’s disco tracks like Odyssey’s "Native New Yorker". It’s really a bit like being a kid in a dance music dream store, especially when you consider the fact that RCA is seemingly holding back nothing…even releasing new mixes of current songs like yet another Clarkson hit "Walk Away" that are as little as three weeks old!

"The days when a DJ got a 12-inch and held onto it forever and it wasn’t widely available are over," said Gureli describing the new day in dance music this new venture heralds.

And best of all, this is just the beginning. Each month RCA plans to roll out new additions to the vault, ultimately creating what could well become the face of dance music on the web. Next month, look for the floodgates to open on mixes of 80’s dance chart toppers like Jermaine Stewart’s signature hits "The Word Is Out" and "We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off"…everything Expose …a whole lot of Taylor Dayne …maybe some Lisa Stanfield…the late Phyllis Hyman’s "Riding The Tiger"

and even The Blow Monkeys’ "Digging Your Scenes." Then just in time for gay pride in May and June get ready for what can only be described as a summer of divas.

"What I think is really going to resonate in the gay community is when we concentrate on months May and June," says Gureli. "I have enough material between Deborah Cox and Whitney Houston to fill pages and pages in the vault and we’re just going to let it out. From exclusive Junior Vasquez remixes to stuff that I could never fit onto a 12-inch because you can only fit so many mixes on a 12-inch. There’s so much extra stuff and I can put it all up there for the world to get…and not just DJ’s but actual fans."

Can you even handle it? Hey if we can’t get a new Whitney album we can at least get to hear ‘The Voice’ as we’ve never heard her before on iTunes this summer.

When I asked Hosh what inspired this new project which is stirring up all kinds of excitement across the dance community, his response was simple and personal. "I was on iTunes over a year ago and I looked up ‘Native New Yorker’ being a native myself and I didn’t see it up there," he says seemingly stunned by the revelation. "I thought, ‘My god this is one of the all-time classic records and it’s not on iTunes.

Then I started looking for other titles like ‘Disco Nights’ and ‘There For The Grace of God’ and certainly the longer club friendly versions were not up there. So I said, it’s going to be my mission, now that we are the RCA Music Group…to put a destination for dance music up on iTunes at least from a group perspective."

From that kernel of an idea, RCA Music Group’s Dance Vault has come to fruition in what we can all only hope will be ground zero in a revitalization of dance music across the board. No matter what happens, one thing’s for sure.. iPods across the globe are going to be gettin’ awfully groovy in the very near future. Yeah baby!

CLASSIC DANCE TRACKS FROM THE RCA MUSIC GROUP TO BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME DIGITALLY BEGINNING MARCH 21

NEW YORK The RCA Music Group announced today an ambitious new dance music series presenting both reissues of out-of-print classics and previously unreleased remixes of contemporary hits from artists on RCA, Arista and J Records. The first offerings in the new series will arrive March 21, released as downloads through iTunes exclusively for thirty days. The series will then be made available through additional subscription services such as RealNetworks’ Rhapsody and Sony Connect.

The artists range from such current stars as Kelly Clarkson and Heather Headley to Seventies and Eighties hit makers like Machine and Odyssey.

The RCA Music Group is the first major label to make its classic mixes available for download to the mass-market consumer. With its rich history in dance music, the label will present out of print and never-before-released mixes of the greatest dance tracks of all time by the biggest names in music -- Aretha, Whitney and Kelly Clarkson among others, as well as music from the disco era including classics like There For The Grace of God and Disco Nights to the 80’s classics from Evelyn Champagne King, Rick Astley & The Eurythmics.

"We created this series so these classic songs and remixes could be enjoyed by music fans worldwide. Offering digital access to this treasure trove of repertoire allows us the opportunity to serve an ever-expanding audience," explains Charles Goldstuck, President & COO BMG U.S. Label Group.

Spearheading this project from the creative side is RCA Music Group Vice President of A&R Hosh Gureli. Gureli realized that there was a need to invigorate the dance community "who has always been the first to adopt digital technology," he explains. "It’s our mission to present out of print and unreleased mixes to the core dance audience for them to enjoy now and forever. Before now, these tracks were only available to club djs and producers."

Among the highlights from the first group of titles:

Kelly Clarkson: "Walk Away"

The new series will feature five versions of this track from Kelly’s RCA album Breakaway (winner of the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album), including mixes by Chris Cox, Craig J, and Ralphi Rosario.

Heather Headley: "In My Mind"

Ten versions of the title track from Heather’s hit-bound RCA album In My Mind will be released, including multiple mixes by the Freemasons (Russell Small and James Wiltshire) and Dave Hernandez.

Icicle Works: "Whisper To A Scream" One of the classic alternative

80’s songs of all time.

Odyssey: "Native New Yorker"

Original 12-inch copies of this 1977 disco classic, produced by Sandy Linzer & Charlie Calello, command top prices among DJs and collectors; now, all three versions (Extended, Long Edit, and Radio Hit) will be reissued.

Machine: "There But For The Grace Of God Go I"

Produced by August Darnell, Machine’s 1979 debut single was an incisive piece of urban social commentary with an irresistible beat, released in Extended and Edited versions.

Dance Vault Gets Billboard's Stamp of Approval
